Frequently Asked Questions

What is yard waste?

Also referred to as green waste, it refers to leftover vegetation or organic litter resulting from landscaping activities. These include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Brush
  • Grass clippings
  • Holiday trees
  • Leaves
  • Mulch
  • Shrub prunings
  • Tree trunks
  • Twigs

How long before grass clippings decompose?

Because they’re primarily made of water, decomposition only takes a couple of weeks. If you want to hasten the process, let the grass grow higher and cut no more than the top 1/3 of the blade. The smaller the clippings, the faster they decompose.

What happens to garden waste after collection?

These go to a processing facility where they will be converted into compost or mulch. They need to pass Australian standards first before being sold as fertilisers to farmers, parklands, and communities.
